Advanced Bioproduct Systems: Feedstocks

Description

We will provide an overview of biobased feedstocks for production of fuels, food and industrial chemicals. Issues in feedstock utilization such as suitability, availability, sustainability and economic viability will be addressed.

 

Topics Covered

· Basics of a biobased economy. 

· Overview of technologies for bioprocessing for fuels and chemicals.

· Feedstocks: Classification, properties,  and selection.

· Starch, lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose, lipids, animal and recycled/waste products.

· Feedstocks: Availability, sustainability and economic potential.

Course Format

Weekly 1 hour lectures, class tests, take home exams and review of a journal article.
